ok.. here is a question.. for a tomato plant, is it better to get seeds or a one thats already growing?

Gardening takes time and patience.
First place to start is soil, make sure the soil type is adequate for the veggies you are planting. Make sure the pots and/or soil drains properly, and sunshine is very important.
Last, do not overwater. Beleive me, it's very easy to overwater.

There are plenty of internet resources, make sure when you look into it, you get information for your region.

Our local school's agriculture class sold some tomato plants last year. They raised them from seeds. They were fifty cents a plant and a lot cheaper than buying the plants from the local grocery store.

Are you planning on doing them in containers or in the ground?

I have no problem growing them by seed. If you plan on keeping them in a container, I plant them and put some plastic wrap over the top.

If you are going to plant them in the ground. Get seed flats and again I put plastic over the flats to keep in the moisture. Once they have sprouted, I pull off the plastic. I would wait until they are about 6 inches tall before transplanting them into the ground. And look up the online when the best time to plant in your area is.

I started tomatoes plants by seed about 3 weeks ago and they are already 4 inches tall!

It's getting a little late though, to start from seeds, that is, if you want fruit early. But still, they will grow and produce, and it's rewarding.

Why not try both? buy a couple of plants, and a packet of seeds. One thing i would suggest, is go with a disease resistant variety..."amelia" is a good one. in the cooler months, pour the nitrogen to them. You will want to pinch out the first blooms...believe me, i've done this for a long time. Maybe let one or two plants go, but the majority, this is the way to grow tomatoes.

When the plant is up and healthy, and it has had time to develop a sound root system...change the fertilizer. Here, you will want higher phosphorous, 10-60-10 you can get this stuff at wal mart...bloom plus or bloom boost..the plant will begin to flower, and this is where they need a lot of water. keep the soil moist. you will need to stake them, and keep the foliage off the ground. Sucker the bottom leaves. In the warmer months less fertilizer...5-10-15 and sparingly.

I could write a book on this stuff, and basically i have here.. But i wanted to give you my best advice.

Come on now! You are going to confuse the poor girl! Just buy some miracle grow fertilizer. If you are growing plants in containter/pots, be sure to get a potting mix (better than top soil). If you are planting in the ground you might want to work on the soil, ask when you get to that point.
