I do not know when this crime actually happened but I just watched the movie on it. It's about a boy that dressed as a girl and was killed for it, and his mother fights for justice for the crime.

The thing that bothered me (other than her murder) was that the defense lawyer wanted the law to blame society for what the 4 boys did not the boys themselves....

Society did not tie the girl up for 5 hours and beat her nor did society strangle the girl...the boys did that, in the end all 4 boys received a conviction for some kind of murder. 2 got murder in the 2nd degree, 1 plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter, and 1 plead no contest to voluntary manslaughter. Not one of the boys received a hate crime charge (yes they knew that gwen was actually a boy).

It saddened me that the lawyer would actually try to get the boys acquitted due to society...
