Perry Kellogg hadn’t been having the best luck a guy could have when he landed in South Carolina last month.

He’d quit his job as a cook on O Street in November after his hours were cut in half, thinking he’d pick up another job quick.

But the 42-year-old Lincoln man quickly found out otherwise. Jobs grilling steaks for people who aren’t dining out during the Wall Street Free Fall were as scarce as bonuses for bank presidents.

And so when his only son’s Army boot camp graduation rolled around Feb. 6, he was out of work and nearly broke.

But nothing was going to keep him from Ethan’s big day.

“He’s my pride and joy,” the gravel-voiced man with hazel eyes and gray in his hair said last week.

Ethan’s mom died when he was 4. Perry had pretty much been a single dad before that, but after, well, the two of them were all each other had.

His sister paid for the 30-hour bus trip to Fort Jackson, Perry said. And she helped out with his motel room, too.

But he was down to his last $40 before the first day was over, after a sly cab driver took the long, long way to his motel from the bus station.

And that’s when the kindness of strangers kicked in.

He landed at the base’s noncommissioned officer’s club that first morning and bought a cup of coffee at the restaurant. A guy can live without the breakfast buffet, but coffee is a necessity and cheap besides.

That’s when he met Vene Somoba, a hostess with a round face and big smile.

They started to talk. She sent him through the buffet line for free.

She told him his first cab driver had given him the runaround.

Go see Mac, she said. Eddy Mac was the NCO barber who also leased a cab from Blue Ribbon Cabs, a cab company that served the base.

For the next two days, Mac put Perry in his car and gave him rides to Fort Jackson Family Day and then to the boot camp graduation. “He went out of his way so I could get around.”

And Mac set him up with another driver for rides back to his motel at night, at a cost far less than the first driver charged.

And then there was Beatrice Aidoo, the waitress who pulled $10 out of her pocket and pressed it into Perry’s hand. A broad-shouldered Southern woman who loaded him up with bananas and milk and granola bars for the bus ride home.

The wonder was still in his voice weeks later.

“It really restored my faith in people.”

He took photos of his benefactors with his digital camera before he got on the bus to come home.

Vene and Beatrice grinning with their arms about each other’s shoulders.

Mac smiling from behind the wheel of his cab in his fedora.

Tuesday, Perry brought the camera to the newsroom.

He’d just come back from his umpteenth job interview.

“I got the job,” he said grinning. “I’m relieved beyond belief.”

He started training at Brewsky’s in the Haymarket last night.

He’s already sent his friends down south thank-you cards, telling them how wonderful they were for taking care of him.

He’s going to write to their bosses next.

“I want them to know what extraordinary employees they have.”

His son made it through Airborne School and is headed to Fort Lee in Virginia for advanced individual training next. Perry is planning another trip when that graduation day comes.

The guy who’s flipping burgers feels lucky again.

“I just want people to know there are good, good people out there.”
