New Clues In Hunt For Madeleine
Updated: 11:40, Thursday May 10, 2007 Police hunting for missing Madeleine McCann are today scrutinising four pieces of "very useful" fresh information, Crimestoppers has revealed. Madeleine: Missing for a weekThe tip-offs come one week after the three-year-old was taken from her holiday apartment on the Algarve. They were among hundreds of calls made from Portugal to a special UK telephone number set up by the charity. A spokeswoman said they have been passed to Leicestershire Police, who are working alongside Portuguese police on the case. According to reports, officers are also looking at CCTV footage showing a girl fitting Madeleine's description with a woman at a service station just a few miles from the village of Praia Da Luz, on the road towards Spain. The Portuguese newspaper, 24 Horas, said the woman was in her 40s, blonde and appeared foreign. The new clues have come as Portuguese police prepare to scale back their search for Madeleine. Around 800 officers are believed to have been involved in the investigation so far. Former British police officer and child protection expert Mark Williams-Thomas told Sky News he believed it was too early to reduce the operation. "What worries me is if they are cutting back, then have they done the basics right?" he said. But the investigative Policia Judiciaria (PJ) have not commented publicly, hinting only that they have narrowed down their lines of investigation. They say the rules mean they cannot release a computer generated image of a possible suspect. The email posterBut it emerged yesterday that an image, shown by plain clothes police to local shopkeepers, is little more than a crude outline of a long oval face with hair but no facial features. The Portuguese police's efforts are being boosted by information from the UK and work by British officers. Among them is Superintendent Graham Hill of Surrey Police, who is working with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (Ceop) Centre while on secondment to Britain's FBI-style Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca). He investigated the disappearance and murder of Surrey schoolgirl Amanda "Milly" Dowler. A poster campaign has also been launched by Madeleine's family. More than 21,000 copies of the poster have been downloaded from the Sky News website and the family have now made it available in French and Spanish. Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, have gone "through the mangle" with their emotions "ripped", according to Gerry's brother John McCann. The couple have insisted they remain positive and strong. The local Catholic church in Praia Da Luz will today hold a vigil for Madeleine, who will be four on Saturday. :: There are new telephone numbers to call for people with any information: If you are in the UK, call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111. If you are in Portugal, call the Judicial Police +351 282 405 400 or Crimestoppers +44 1883 731 336. |

To Find Missing Madeleine Updated: 02:43, Friday May 11, 2007 A reward of £1m has reportedly been offered for information leading to the return of missing Madeleine McCann. Madeleine: Missing for one weekBusinessman Stephen Winyard, owner of a Scottish health spa called Stobo Castle, said he was "frustrated" there had been no developments in the case. Portuguese police said on Thursday they were winding down their search for the three-year-old. There has been no arrests, no one has been detained and much of the surrounding countryside has been searched. It is thought Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, was abducted while she slept in her hotel room last Thursday in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz. Mr Winyard, a 57-year-old father-of-three who lives in Monaco, told The Times newspaper: "When I saw their faces, I felt frustrated that no one else had yet come forward offering a substantial reward, and so felt compelled to do so myself." The offer has been put to the McCann family in Portugal. It is not known whether the country's laws allow the cash to be paid. A relative of Madeleine has already offered £100,000. Madeleine McCann's pyjamasChief Inspector Olegario Sousa, speaking at Thursday's press conference, confirmed police were reviewing CCTV footage taken from several locations. Sky News correspondent Martin Brunt said police were focusing on two men and a woman seen with a girl matching Madeleine's description. The footage was taken at a service station a few miles from the village of Praia da Luz a few days ago, on the road towards Spain. The Portuguese newspaper, 24 Horas, said the woman was in her 40s, blonde and appeared foreign. Brunt said police have shown a still from the CCTV to a British tourist who confirmed it showed a man he had to chase off from photographing his daughter. "I'm also being told that a town or village has been sealed off near Seville in southern Spain. It is not a long journey to get from the Algarve across the border," he said. The Portugal News posterPolice also released photographs of the pyjamas similar to those worn by Madeleine on the night she went missing. And they said the McCann family had been re-interviewed, although there was nothing "suspicious" about that. Earlier, a special service was held in the village church at Praia Da Luz in Portugal to mark one week since Madeleine McCann was abducted. The three-year-old's mother, Kate, repeatedly broke down in tears and had to be supported by a friend as she listened to prayers for Madeleine's safe return. :: A poster campaign has been extended by Madeleine's family. Thousands of copies of the poster have been downloaded from the Sky News website and the family have now made it available in French and Spanish. There are new telephone numbers to call for people with any information: If you are in the UK, call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111. If you are in Portugal, call the Judicial Police +351 282 405 400 or Crimestoppers +44 1883 731 336. |

Madeleine Police Hunt Suspect
Updated: 18:10, Saturday May 12, 2007 Police hunting for Madeleine McCann are trying to trace a man seen near her holiday apartment at the time she was snatched, Sky News can reveal. Missing: Madeleine McCannCrime correspondent Martin Brunt said he was spotted near the flat at the Praia da Luz complex around the time the four-year-old vanished nine days ago. "We don't know how significant it is, but there are several reports of a man hanging around the apartment on the day she disappeared or perhaps the day before," he said. "One report suggests he was sitting in a small, white van. Police have got a good description of the man: about 5ft 8in tall, between 30 and 35, not Portuguese according to one of the witnesses, wearing a blue jacket and white trousers." Brunt said police had found the van and "eliminated" it from their inquiries, but not the man. Distraught: Madeleine's parentsHe said police had produced an e-fit of the suspect which they had been showing to people inside the apartment block in an attempt to jog their memories. Brunt added that police are also keen to trace an American man who lives in the village but who has not been seen for several days - and who also drives a white van. Earlier, Madeleine's parents appealed for people to redouble their efforts to find her on the day they should have been celebrating her fourth birthday. Gerry and Kate McCann said in a statement: "Please keep looking, please keep praying, please bring Madeleine home." Children tie yellow ribbons on Madeleine's fourth birthdayThey added that the support being offered to them on a daily basis and the "huge amount of effort and resource" being put into the hunt for her were "what keep us strong and... give us hope". Prayers are being said and vigils kept both in the UK and Portugal for the youngster. Hundreds of people attended a church service for her at St Andrew's Catholic Cathedral in Glasgow. Madeleine's father, Gerry, is from the city, and Celtic players will wear yellow armbands in sympathy for the family's plight when they play Aberdeen. Last night, her parents were honoured with spontaneous applause by villagers after a packed late night vigil at the village church at Praia da Luz. Appeal: David BeckhamHer family have asked that residents in their home town of Rothley, Leicestershire, do not celebrate Madeleine's fourth birthday. They requested that plans for a party be put on hold until she is found and returns home - but a birthday prayer vigil is set to take place tonight. Family friends have also released balloons in nearby Queniborough bearing personal messages of love, hope and support for Madeleine and her family. In Portugal, around 200 ex-pats gathered to tie yellow ribbons on railings outside the holiday complex where she was abducted. The possibility that she was snatched by kidnappers who took her out of Portugal and into Spain has galvanised support from the expatriate community there. Some 40,000 people have downloaded posters of the four-year-old from the Sky News website and put them on public display. CCTV footage of a woman and two men with a girl matching Madeleine's description at a nearby petrol station is being analysed by police. Their car had British number plates. Meanwhile, David Beckham has appealed for the safe return of the youngster. And British businessman Stephen Winyard has offered a £1m reward to anyone with information leading to her return. |
