Both are at fault. When girl was warned she should have asked him about it straight up. Guy is at fault for putting himself in that position without advising girl of it.

Seriously though, I think he is more to blame. Ignoring the friend's warning is not a moral offense. She is only to blame for hurting herself. The relationship not being viable is totally - 100% - HIS fault.
