I was seventeen. My first car was a 1972 Plymouth Valiant "Scamp" with "Slant Six" six-cylinder engine, three-speed automatic transmission, and 8.25-inch differential gear.
It was also the car I almost got killed in- an illegal immigrant driving a late-nineties Jeep Wrangler blew through a red light at speed (approximately 40 MPH) and broadsided me, almost send my brother (who was my passenger at the time) and me into a storefront. Instead of stopping or doing "the right thing", he decided to run for it. While he WAS eventually caught, the police refused to prosecute him anything, not even felony hit-and-run (which he was guilty of, according to a friend of mine who is a court judge). He ended up sneaking back to his home country not long after that. |

Bicentennial year. My father drove truck. One of the guys he worked with bought a brand new kenworth conventional truck. It was painted exactly like the kenworth from 'Smokey and the bandit'. Black n gold stripes. Well I was 11 years old and I was riding with my dad for a week. We had stopped for lunch with his coworker doug and his big ole smokey and the bandit kenworth. While inside eating lunch doug jokingly said "Hey kyle, I gotta get fuel, so why don't you run out, jump in my truck, and bring it around to the fuel pump for me". I didn't know he was joking. So imagine the surprises on everyones faces in the truckstop as I drove by them. Doug, my dad, and all their freinds faces squashed to the window in terror as I drove by. I had no problems. Watched my dad drive since I was little. Got in, made sure it wasn't in gear. Dropped the air ride seat so I could reach the pedals. Started it up, built up air, pushed in the brake plungers, stepped on the clutch. Put it in gear. Gently eased out the clutch and rolled. Got up to RPM. Double clutched and shifted. Went from granny through the bottom basement gears, dumped the air hi range selector and bumped it up to high range gears. My only thought was if I scratched dougs brand spanking new smokey and the bandit truck- he would kill me. Just as professionally as I started- I dropped gears and slowly and carefully brought the truck up and stopped it at the fuel pumps. By then the group of drivers were out there with me. My dad was laughing as he explained that doug was just joking and I replied that I was just doing as I was asked to. A year later both doug and my dad would let me run to texas driving. Had my farm utility license at 15 and CDL at 16. Its hard to believe that was 4 million miles ago. 3 million miles alone at my current job without an accident. Wow!

My first car was a '68 Chevrolet Impala w/ 427 engine, yellow with a black Vinyl top, I had to start it with a screwdriver to the celenoid, the heat was out in winter so I had to wear layers to drive it, it got rear-ended by a 70 year old man driving of all things in 1988 a '77 Plymouth in the ugliest green you ever did see. Ahhhhh, memories....
