Have you ever been to Cozumel? What was your first impression of this place?

I love, love love Cozumel

I leave my house and car unlocked most of the time. Sometimes even at night. It is a small island, you know, the crime rate is almost 0.

and yet more people have been killed in the cartel wars in Mexico than has been killed in the Iraq War.

Maybe it's not so bad in Cozumel but I wont take chances until the war is over

I have a house on the Beach in San Felipe and a get outta jail free card from the Cheif of Police in town. I love it.

Most of the Crime that might involve tourists are the border towns and of course the larger tourist towns.

I'll be headed back to Cozumel in August, on a cruise, can't wait

I love Cozumel ! Have been there several times.. Just love the atmosphere and the food...All the shops and beaches..snorkeling..

The snorkeling there is really great. Thinking of doing a beginner scuba course there when I go in August.

Maybe what you are saying is true. But who is basically being killed in Mexico are narcotraffichers, drug dealers and policmen fighting them -Never tourists.

As for kidnapping I never heard of kidnapped tourists. They usually kidnap local guys.

The farthest I went into Mexico was Tijuana back over ten years ago. The experience was SUCH a disgusting one that I swore on a drunken sailor lying on the curb that I'd never go south-of-the-border again.

And tourists are fair game as far as murders go- the drug fiasco that is going on down there has essentially exploded in the last couple of years. If you aren't killed just for being in the middle of a drug cartel shootout, you're murdered for your money and bling. This stretches from TJ all the way down to Mazatlan and regions of Chiapas.

Tourists are especially vulnerable to kidnappings and being held in prison without trial by crooked police down there, too.

To say that neither won't happen is simply not true.

There are a lot of Americans and people from Europe living in Mexico (in Cozumel, Playa de Carmen, Cancun etc). If you do not believe me that it is safe here in Mexico you may ask them in the expat forums. Here are some of the forums:

Cozumel
I just got back from Cozumel. I spend 2 weeks every winter with absolutley no problems!! In all the years ive been there no problems. The drug wars and killings seem to be in Mexico proper and the border towns with the USA. Not in Cozumel.The local Mexican papers reflect this also. Unless something crazy happens in Cozumel.
I would go back in a second! But for now i recomend it!

i've lived here 21 years,and now am retired for a few years. safe? you bet.nothing happens here,except a drunken tourist crashes their car,after going around the island,stopping at every beach bar. no flu in q-roo. all in mexico city.come and enjoy our island.

Guess I will find out in September the cruise I'm taking one of the stops is Cozumel can't wait have heard a lot of good things about it.

Cozumel is one the best places in the world to dive.

Anyone ever dived there? I'm dying to go ..just have to put some $$$ together
