Barack Obama has taken the oath of office for a second time after stumbling over the words when originally sworn-in as president.

In a highly unusual move, the new leader took the oath in the Map Room of the White House, the day after his inauguration as the nation's first African-American president.

Chief Justice John Roberts, who first administered the oath on Tuesday on the steps of the US Capitol, again performed the ceremony.

But this time in front of only a handful of staff and journalists - and with no bible.

"We believe that the oath of office was administered effectively and that the President was sworn in appropriately (on Tuesday)," said White House legal adviser Greg Craig.

"But the oath appears in the Constitution itself.

"And out of an abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice Roberts administered the oath a second time."

The reporters present said Mr Obama was sitting on a couch and joked: "We decided it was so much fun..."

He then stood and walked over to make small talk with the journalists as Justice Roberts donned his black robes.

"Are you ready to take the oath?" Justice Roberts asked.

"I am, and we're going to do it very slowly," Mr Obama replied.

After a flawless recitation, which took 25 seconds, Justice Roberts smiled and said: "Congratulations - again."

One reporter, Wes Allison, of the St Petersburg Times, told Sky News: "We didn't know it was going to happen so we were a little shocked.

"It was just a technicality - just to be safe - to be sure it was delivered correctly.

"There was no Bible - just a plain ceremony. Justice Roberts in a plain black robe and Obama in a suit.

"No family was there - just seven staffers and four reporters."

Sky's Foreign Affairs editor Tim Marshallsaid: "He is concerned about conspiracy rumours that he purposefully didn't take the oath properly because of his nationality and his religion will start circulating.

"So, due to an abundance of caution, he just wants to nail that and get it right."

He added: "The problem is, the second time he did it they couldn't find a bible in the Map Room, which is not technically necessary but the conspiracy theorists will make something of that."

At the end of his first day in the Oval Office, the President announced he had asked military commanders to draw up plans for a "responsible" withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Mr Obama, who opposed the Iraq war, has said he wants to redeploy thousands of combat troops from the country to Afghanistan.

Despite an amazing turnout for his inauguration, the US TV audience was actually less than for former actor Ronald Reagan.

Almost 37.8 million people watched Tuesday's ceremony and celebrations in their own homes, while the Reagan event in 1981 attracted 41.8 million.

So, I'm not supposed to be critical of this, just because some dolt preemptively said "Conspiracy Theory"? Bump that, nothing would ever get brought into the light if that nonlogic was ever put into practice.

There are reporters at Bilderberg and the CFR meetings and you never hear them putting reports on the evening news, so I'm supposed to give blind support and trust to the media? Not gonna happen.

7 staffers and 4 reporters is not in "public" it's in front of a handful of people inside the White House.

DTA.

can we make up some more stupidity to blow out of proportion? The man took the oath in front of 2 million people and just to make sure he took it again correctly so it would be on record. If it was a secret, how would you know?
