Over and over
Time and again
This three syllable word,
Re-mem-ber,
Has rolled through my mind
Before sleep overshadowed the familiar refrain.

Each and every time
I would awake questioning,
Re-mem-ber ------- what?


Remember the pain
Remember the sorrow.
They occurred in the past
Don’t repeat them tomorrow.

Remember Hitler
And a world gone insane.
Remember Slavery
And the price of that pain.

Remember your country
Torn by Civil War
Touted as north-n-south,
yet touching each shore.

When Grant and Lee
Finally ended that beef,
Expansion out west
Escalated more grief.

I could rant and rave
I wasn’t here then.
It isn’t my fault.
“As above so below”,
By my own belief,
I am caught.

Re-member defined as perhaps:
Become a universal member again.
Remember the spirit
Carried by force of will.
History repeats
Unless self-control and change
Are deeply instilled.
