I am a composer, music education student, and music teacher. I read about music and study all sorts of things involved. I am wondering what all of you define music as?
Define Music is it art? is it entertainment? is it an extention of oneself? is it a representation of ones surroundings? is it a product of nature? etc... |

music is whatever people make it out to be. someone may listen to some types of music to relate to problems or situations going on in their life. others may just like something because of the message.
personally, i like all types of music. sometimes it's good to listen to something and be able to relate to it. other times i listen to something that may pump me up or something that takes out the anger. other times i listen to something that's calming and relaxing. i also weite music so it's also a way of expressing myself. if i'm in a bad mood, i'll write something dark and heavy. if i'm in a good mood, i might write something upbeat and more rock and roll. im gonna stop now cuz i could talk about music literally all day. |

Define Music is it art? is it entertainment? is it an extention of oneself? is it a representation of ones surroundings? is it a product of nature? etc... Music is indeed all of these things.. It is also whatever you want/need it to be.. As a musician I have written some things that may "sound" like complete garbage to other people but at that moment of creation/mutation (depending on how you see it) it may "feel" completely right. Like all things, music is constantly evolving and stretching in order to satisfy the creators as well as the listeners musical "appetite". It is the difference of opinion where I find most of my enjoyment. |

btw i was just joking.
i love music, but im tired of trying to define it. read "aesthetics of music" by roger scruton, a bunch of stuff by jerrold levinson (actually one of my teachers) and some others and you too will grow tired of the subject lol. just sit back relax and enjoy. or jump around get pumped and enjoy lol. etc. |
