All this is nice , but how does it help me find my glasses in the morning? tie a string to em |

String theory sucks because you can't pull it apart on account of the vacuum!

"String theory sucks, and it isn't Science"
String theory is a hypothesis under scrutiny and testing. How much more "science" can you get than that?! Electricity is a theory. But that's turned out pretty well for us so far. |

But I did want to ask you a question. Where did the prediction of the mini black holes come from for the LHC Experiments?
Was that string theory, I have got my wires crossed lately, I seem to remember hearing that there finally may be a testable prediction, do you remember hearing that? Was it the MBH's? I haven't been keeping up with science lately and my mind is growing feeble. So I'm not sure what's going on with the LHC experiments. However, I can say with certainty that the theory of Mini Black Holes existed long before String Theory. They were believed to have been created during the Big Bang just using standard physics and GR. String Theory may have something additional to say about them however. That part I'm not clear on. One thing that I found quite interesting is that when mini black holes evaporate they explode and the explosions are gargantuan. In fact, there's a story about this in the opening prolouge of Kip Thorne's book, Black Holes & Time Warps. String theory has not been my topic of study for the last two years, it was a nice way to get more enthusiasm for physics in general, however its not my forte. |

strings? strings are just grasping at straws! but then again all theory is just grasping at straws. Straw Theory by Abra In the beginning there existed a strawman but all his arguments failed He wanted a life but hadn't a wife so an ingenious design he unveiled He created a world made of straw and everyone watched him in awe The physics was good but quite misunderstood and that was his critical flaw The straw would burn out and life couldn't sprout and smoke pervaded the space The skies became cloudy his angels were rowdy about the mess he'd made of the place A Goddess observed the commotion and created for strawman an ocean It put out the fires and quenched his desires so he gave Her his total devotion She created a world made of strings that vibrate like minuscule springs the strawman was pleased and to Her he appeased with a lyrical tune that he sings |

There is actually a book out about just this subject called "The Trouble with Physics." Reading it was engaging, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to understand string theory, where it started, it's great hopes, allure, and ultimate infertily and stalemate, all put into a unbiased perspective by Lee Smolin.
It's a story that deserves to be told in an honest, straight light. It's too easy to defend or dis aimlessley. It just seems too good to be true... |

I was under the impression that string theory was outdated and superceded by an equally useless membrane theory. Our great mathematical minds at work. I think M-Theory is where it lead to mostly. The M is a letter that is supposed to be replaced when the actual Unified theory emerges in a leter era. It collects what works for all the facts of science we curreltly know about. But for now, it is more of a description than an actual theory. And there are few if any predictions, and all kinds of knobs to dial. |
