I always thought the general plan was to find someone online, get to know them etc and then date in real life.

You get to know people online. Eventually exchange phone numbers and talk. Maybe even meet in person. The best approach is to take time to get to know the person through emails and im's to see if they are really someone that you would want to date and go from there. I hope this helps.
