The whole nine yards, as referring to going the distance but in football you need to gain ten yards for a first down. Therefore, the whole nine yards is not going the distance and to top it off, you give the ball to the other team. Not quite. It's actually in reference to the length of the ammunition belt of an aircraft machine-gun, which is 27 feet (nine yards). To fire all the rounds in the belt was to go "the whole nine yards". |
