If the family was in DIRE true need, it would be nice if they were forthcoming. But really, otherwise, not expected. If their grandkid needed some kind of surgery that was not covered, I would hope they'd help out.

Well I am marrying their son so really don't matter what they think financially because I am in it for HIM anyhow... and I got money of my own.

I would not expect their help, but I would find their attitude very coarse and rude.

in laws are family...

You can pick your nose ... but you can't pick your friends nose.

Just like you don't get to pick family

If you were "rich" and had a son/daughter in law that was constantly asking you for money what would you say????

I don't expect handouts from anyone. I'd rather be broke and self sufficient than have something that I couldn't pay for.

Oh, but you can pick your in laws. When you marry, you marry all the family history and ways of doing things.

I would absolutely check out my potential in laws before I said "I do." I would wonder want else comes behind their mind thought that is instilled in the person I am about to say, "till death do us part."

My ex-in laws were always willing to help us out as they had a lot of money. However, it was always used to manipulate us later and was held over our heads.
