A torrent is a file of information that collects a "Swarm" of data from other people who have the stuff you are downloading. It's broken up into different little pieces and the torrent collects them and puts them together into a complete file.

Usually, the download clients like Vuze and Azureus which use them give you priority on downloading if you upload a lot of information for other people. That's why people let you download from them most of the time, so they can get what they want faster.
