SHANGHAI (AFP) - A passionate kiss ruptured a young woman's eardrum in southern China, state media reported Monday, in what has been dubbed the "kiss of deaf".

The 20-something girl from Zhuhai city in Guangdong province was treated by hospital doctors after completely losing the hearing in her left ear, the China Daily reported, citing the Guangzhou Daily.

"The kiss reduced the pressure in the mouth, pulled the eardrum out and caused the breakdown of the ear," the treating doctor, surnamed Li, was quoted as saying, adding the woman's hearing would likely recover in about two months.

The incident prompted newspapers to dispense kissing safety advice.

While kissing is normally very safe, doctors urge people to proceed with caution, the China Daily reported.

"A strong kiss may cause an imbalance in air pressure between the two inner ears and lead to a broken ear drum," said the English-language Shanghai Daily in a story headlined "Kiss of deaf."

I wont be reading up on kissing safety. I can see that easily happening. Ima just keep all the girls from kissing my ears...which I do cause i tickles way to much!!

My mom's got a screwed-up inner ear thanks in part to a misguided kiss in the ear by my dad. The noise of his smoochin' essentially overloaded her eardrum, which screwed up the little bones in her ear.

So I don't kiss girls in and around the ear, as it's not cool. I might nibble and lick the area, but that's about it.

We must get NASA involved.

Wow! Must have been some kiss. I don't want this to happen to me if that could happen. Besides, I don't want someone kissing all in my ear. I've heard disturbing stories on what people do to each others' ears. Ewww!

You just have to make sure some air gets in there somehow. I would think if you made sure to breath somewhere in there, then the pressure wouldn't be a problem. She may have been holding her breath. That's the only way I can see that happening.
