Now why are rednecks called rednecks? Is it because their necks get red from all that southern sun or is it because they get their necks slapped all the time? You tell me!

The term redneck is believed to have more than one origin.
1. Railroad workers of the 19th century U.S. were known to have worn red kerchiefs around their necks. Possibly to pull up over their faces to filter coal smoke from the steam locomotives. 2. The "farmers tan", where the individual's body is nearly eggshell white, but the neck has a nice deep suntan, leaving the neck a reddish colour. 3. Then again... |

The West Virginia Coal Miners March or the Battle of Blair Mountain when coal miners wore red bandanas around their necks to identify themselves as seeking the opportunity to unionize.
