So, it's the morning after Thanksgiving (actually 30 minutes after Thanksgiving). Tonight I learned that there is no end to cruelty. I still can not believe what I heard. My parents brought a dog over with them, and we were all told that we had to be extremely carefull around the dog because it had been abused. Now, we grew up around animals. So, my whole family is full of animal lovers. So, this possed no problem. Well, durring dinner the dog came over and laid down next to my chair, and I started sharing some of my dinner with the dog. After dinner I was told that the former owner of the dog, had the dog's vocal cords cut so the dog couldn't bark or make any sound. I mean, the poor animal can't even wine if something is bothering it. I mean, you know how if you step on a dog's tail or paw; it will let out a wine to indicate that it's hurting. Now, I ask you; what kind of person would do that. That bothers me; to think there are those kind of people in the world.

Cowards...to sum it up. They can't/won't/don't fight for themselves and in order to get an upper-hand they draw their anger on to an animal that won't do anything back, and if it does do something back it will pay the price. It's a temporary power trip of sorts, placed into the hands of someone who has never had/taken/granted power...they are weak, short-sighted, and all deserve to burn alive.

Maybe that was not the cruelty that happened- Sure it sounds inhumane but the vet I took my dogs to- recommended that I have that done to my Lab- she barked incessantly and it was so loud- she said I should get her debarked- I did not do it but it is something that vets do recommend in some instances- I do understand your anger though- - if you needed to be careful around that dog- it was probably also beaten by its owner - and that makes me very sad- Dogs love unconditionally and have been known to lick their owners hands even after being hit- that breaks my heart..

I would think that the vocal cord thing would be quite cruel and affect the psychology of the dog significantly. I was raised on a game farm with a large variety of animals, and one must be responsible enough to let the animals be animals and do what is in the best interests for them.

That is extremely cruel. What kind of dog is it? I've heard of people having the prodedure done to certain breeds because they're very vocal. It rates right up there with declawing a cat. Cruel and unnecessary.

i remember a german sheppard that ran from the owner to me, and i wouldn't let the owner have him back, and the dog guarded his back end anywhere around him. i think he was doing the dog... he was uglier than i was, so i know he wasn't getting any...i just had that feeling. really bad!!!!!mad mad mad mad

Not to say I'm a professional when it comes to animal care...but dogs bark, it is what they do when they need something or something attracts their attention. I'm sure the surgery is humane but at the same time it could not only affect the dog emotionally but can also affect the household, what is the dog going to do if someone breaks in? Glad you didn't get the surgery done, I don't agree with the procedure myself.

Had the dog been neutered too???

It wasn't like he cut the dog's neck himself. I have heard dogs with cut cords, they still can make noise, just a harsh whispery sound.

I am very happy that you did not do that to your lab. If you bought or wanted the dog, you should have expected some difficulties. I can not understand a vet recommending that. I'm sorry if I'm offending you LandG, but, a dogs bark is it's only way of communicating. Whether it be danger or discomfort. I'm sorry; I can not and will not condone any kind of torcher to another living animal of any kind. If you are that rude; get rid of it. At the worst; put it down. But, to make another creature live in pain and suffering. That's just wrong.........
