sarcasm like humor are forms of expression without either I may as well be silenced |

So, I wonder... can sarcasm really be appreciated in writing or does it need to be spoken to have the best effect? You'd have to post as many times as Lex or someone similar so we'd know you well enough to interpret. |

So, I wonder... can sarcasm really be appreciated in writing or does it need to be spoken to have the best effect? It's an art form -- and some of us have been arting ourselves all over the forums for ages. Don't try this at home. |

You'd have to post as many times as Lex or someone similar so we'd know you well enough to interpret. That's a good point -- everybody pretty much knows what to expect from me now, and very few ever take me the wrong way, no matter how arrogant and narcissistic I am. Which is actually kind of nice....! |

Sarcasm - never leave home without it!!!

Sarcasm is just one of the talents I offer.

I am pretty sarcastic most of the time.
I find the key to getting away with it is 1) Don't be mean about it 2) Make sure you know that the person you are directing it toward can handle/understand it 3) Just use one of the smileys after it so people can pick up on the fact that it's supposed to be humorous. Of course, you may still run into an occasional situation where one of your posts is misunderstood, but it doesn't happen a whole lot and can usually be remedied by a quick email letting them know that it was meant as a joke and you apologize if they are offended. |

I like the sarcasm to be without the smileys if possible.... makes people stop and think "he didn't REALLY mean that..... did he?"
On the other hand, if it's very edgy and might be offensive to someone, a smiley can help alleviate that. |

what about only a smiley

what about only a smiley Not sure how sarcastic that is. But I like it none-the-less. |

So, I wonder... can sarcasm really be appreciated in writing or does it need to be spoken to have the best effect? Oh my! What an insightful, thought-provoking question. |

It's always been a part of humor for me, but I've found some people don't take it that way! But, then some people don't have a sense of humor either.

I've tested the waters of written sarcasm on here for over a year. I have discovered that written sarcasm on here is like being a politician- half the people will like you, and half the people will hate you. You can't please all the people all the time.

But then again I shouldn't have to apologize for other peoples behavior or actions. So I only am ignorantly sarcastic to those that are ignorant naturally. A case of stupid breeds stupid. But I am not under using sarcasm with humility in picking on myself for I am not above anyone.
