Would the Last Honest Reporter Please Turn On the Lights? By Orson Scott Card Editor's note: Orson Scott Card is a Democrat and a newspaper columnist, and in this opinion piece he takes on both while lamenting the current state of journalism. An open letter to the local daily paper — almost every local daily paper in America: I remember reading All the President's Men and thinking: That's journalism. You do what it takes to get the truth and you lay it before the public, because the public has a right to know. This housing crisis didn't come out of nowhere. It was not a vague emanation of the evil Bush administration. It was a direct result of the political decision, back in the late 1990s, to loosen the rules of lending so that home loans would be more accessible to poor people. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were authorized to approve risky loans. I strongly encourage everyone to read this article. The author is a Democrat, this article blasts the media for not reporting the Democrat and especially Obama's involvement in the housing crisis. |

I dig Orson Scott Card. He is a great author (even though he Mormonizes some stuff) see "Ender's Game"

![]() Mohammad - Over a billion Muslims exist today because of what he taught. Jesus - Over two billion Christians exist today because of what he taught. Karl Marx - Over a hundred million people have been killed by socialism. Alexander Graham Bell - Billions of people own phones because of his research. One person can make massive changes. And nobody says it was one person, if you read the article, you will see a large number of democrats were involved in destroying our housing market in exchange for donations to their election funds. |

How is OSC a Democrat? Every time I see him, he's writing something right wing.

"Democrat" is a philosophy of a style of government. It doesn't restrict a person's right to opinion. It doesn't have to be left or right wing.

"Democrat" is a philosophy of a style of government. It doesn't restrict a person's right to opinion. It doesn't have to be left or right wing. Well, yeah, in the sense of "Democracy", but in the United States, as you know, it's used to define a political party that is center to left. I'm not saying that you can't be a Democrat and hold non-Democratic views, only that every time I see OSC writing something nonfiction, it has a right wing slant. I've never seen him take a Democratic stance on anything. I could be wrong, though, but for some reason dorky scifi friends always send me his stuff so I've seen a lot of it. |

I don't care who you are if you are an adult and you haven't yet figured out you need to consider the source when gathering any sort of information you are not thinking very clearly.

How is OSC a Democrat? Every time I see him, he's writing something right wing. No, he's writing something off the reservation. His personal and religious convictions seem to force him to be truthful. It's a breath of fresh air to see a Democrat who isn't foaming at the mouth mad at Bush and willing to blame everything on his from changes in the weather to problems with the housing market. |

Now you are changing the subject. The source of each of those changes was ONE MAN. Operative word being "ONE" and not "MAN", since I am not a misogynist, but I am characterized as one on these forums. |

It's a common sense response prompted by the subject.
Words matter. Source matters. The authors past and present experiences matter. Who the author is working for matters. There are a ton of factors in the mix when it comes to any kind of information gathering. Can you confirm what the author is saying are the facts through independent sources? (I am not talking blogs where things are often repeated with no real proof.) We've seen a lot of horse**** from both sides. Both from the campaigns, blogs and from persons like the nutjob Martin. Remaining completely neutral when writing about politics is hard. Even if you think you've done a good job of it some more partisan person will nearly always find something to take offense to in what you've written. |
