I know of people who use them to shop online, they top them up with the right amount for their purchase, and should the card get lost, they are not losing a fortune unlike a debit card linked to your bank account

Then get a regular debit card or a pre-paid debit card.

And as a side note, if you really do pay your credit card off every month, there are some real advantages to using a credit card. You are protected from fraudulent purchases and can contest and not pay charges that are not yours. You also get to use somebody else's money for a month and continue to earn interest on your money in your bank account. And there are often discounts, points, frequent flier miles, etc that you can earn.

However carrying an sort of balance on the card completely erases most of the advantages.

And, most people either can't or don't pay off their credit card each month.

you never want to fully pay off your credit card, you want to leave $10 on it so it continues to show up on your credit report as a good pay.

you are paying them to use your own money

maybe a debit card would be better option

if you pay it off, they have no reason to report it. You want the good pays to be reported long term on your CR.
