Do you believe that the persona portrayed by John Wayne in his movies was a bad one or a good one. I'm talking about his overall values and beliefs now, not the characters themselves sometimes.

I think the John Wayne persona was for the most part, a positive image of what the American male should strive to be. Strong, Moral, Respectful, And in no way apologetic for who and what he is.
Almost named my first son after him, But Bobbit and Gacey kinda nixed the positive image. |

I loved to watch his movies. I was born on his birthday too.

Well, I don't want to say my last name here, But it would have rhymed with Gacey, So, I couldn't bring myself to do that to my boy. |

Although I have in no way seen all his movies, especially his early ones, his characters were usually fair minded. One that was not, IMHO, was that of "Ethan" in the Searchers.

Ethan in Searchers was a compelling character, not necessarily a nice guy, but a very interesting character. John Wayne's characters often have a touch of scoundrel. My favorite John Wayne movie was Big Jake.

One of my favorites was McClintok. It was funny as hell!!!!
Probably one of his most distingushed movies thet really showed his values though was his last.....The Shootist.... His short speech to Gilliam while they were target practicing was especially good. |
