is also my lover. Do you think that's correct, or should they be separate people?

Can you not have your lover as your best friend AND another best friend or do we just have one best friend?

By definition, best friend is singular.

they should definatly be kept separate, there are things you may need to talk about that a friend/lover may be unable to hear because of lack of objectivity, they loose their imparciality.. I have lost a couple of REALLY good and important friends because we crossed the line and then could never recover the friendship when the lover part went south....

If you really are interested in having a friend, then dont make them your lover, now its really nice that your lover is a friend, makes the intimacy all the better, but its not the same kind of friendship..at least in my opinion.

My best friend has always been separate from the person I was dating. It has been the same person since high school, too.

I have a best friend who is male, but since I don't have a lover, he's not that too. I also have a couple "best" friends who are female. There are things I can talk to my male best friend about, that I wouldn't talk to my female best friends about...vice versa.

My ex was and still is my best friend...only problem was we became best friends AFTER our relationship started, which, I think, is the wrong way to do things. I don't think there's anything wrong with your lover being your best friend.

The friendship I have with my best friend could not be replaced by a partner.

Any mate I have would be a friend and hopefully a wonderful one. But romance and friendship are intertwined and enmeshed..... my best friend is pretty objective with me.
