Drive the speed limit. Or more to the point, don't exceed the speed limit (on highways) by more than 10-15MPH.
Avoid the brakes. Sounds stupid, but braking can cause fuel economy to drop like you wouldn't believe. Letting off the gas before your exit on the highway (assuming traffic isn't a problem) is much better than jamming the brakes on an off ramp. Avoid using the cruise control in hilly areas. The cruise setting doesn't know it's not a level grade or a hill. It just thinks to itself: "Gotta get to 70... gotta get to 70.". Keep your tires properly inflated. Most vehicles have the recommendations on the driver's doorjamb sticker. This is perhaps the single best (easiest, cheapest) thing you can do to achieve instant gains in MPG. |

dont gun it. ease up to you desired speed. driving at high rpms can decrease your MPG. i find keeping your rpms between 2k-3k helps a lot.

also make sure you change your oil at regular intervals, as clean oil will improve lubrication in the engine and improve economy.
make sure your tires are properly inflated. make sure your car as properly tuned up. |

how do i GET better gas mileage???? All of this other stuff is good, but it's stuff YOU have to do, except I don't agree with the cruise control thing......but each to his own...... Change your oil regularly......it'll also make your engine last longer. But my big thing is I put in a K&N air filter in my truck. Gave me about 2 miles per gallon more......More horsepower and I don't have to change it......just clean it every now and then. |

Get a scooter for running around town, and only use your car for bad weather days, or when you need to move large items. I see alot of folks ridin around on those new 50cc chinese scooters that sell for about $1000.00 out the door, and the 5 or 6 people that I have asked about them are very happy with them.

Its easy to clean and saves money in the long run on filters. |

Its easy to clean and saves money in the long run on filters. Only problem with the K&N filter is when you do clean it not to put to much oil back on it. The basics help with the gas mileage for tire pressure go by what the manufacture sticker on the drivers door not what the tire rating is. Normal maintenance of your oil, filters(oil, air, fuel and even transmission)PVC valve, even cleaning your motor helps. Dirty motors retain heat. And even avoiding using max cool on your A/C |

purolator makes these disposable filters that have an oiled filter element. it supposedly gives you the best of both worlds- the performance of a re-usable filter and the ability to dispose of it when it's life-cycle is over with.
