A simple hi will do. A witty line is great..as long as it's witty.

You know, now that I think about it.... I think all it really takes is her smiling and saying something nice or friendly.

the polar bear comment would make me laugh, you'd be in for at least 5 minutes with me.... where you'd go from there, well you got 5 minutes.

I was at a bar one night with 8 friends, they had dollar shots, it was my turn to buy, so I went up to the bar and ordered 9... this guy sitting there with a hat on (not a baseball cap, like a men's hat) said to the bartender "Make it 10" I looked at him and looked at her and said "Make it 10" he laughed and said he was kidding, I wasn't.... I dated him for 9 months....

How do you men/women like being approached from the opposite sex?

I like it -- it happens, although not nearly often enough....

Rather it be in a social setting or private??

Either way is fine -- for me, it usually happens in a public place, but I'm OK with attractive strangers knocking on my door....

What usually turns you onto someone by the first words spoken??
Would you like maybe a out going attitude or a collective one??

I like to see some sign of intelligence, although well-phrased flattery will suffice in a pinch -- one of my favorites was a girl who came to my apartment and said "I knew you were an artist the first time I saw you" -- I don't remember having ever seen her before -- and she was a good person to hang out with, for awhile --

Sometimes, that sort of directness is a nice change from the usual SOP....
