In Plain Sight

As the sun rises,
The Cowboy drops to one knee,
Swipes the hat from his bowed head
And gives thanks to the Lord
for the day ahead.

As the sun rises,
The Indian holds his pipe high overhead,
Brings the pipe back down to his lips
Lighting the tobacco within
So the smoke carries his prayers
Of thanks for the day
To the Creator of All That Is.

Both have their feet encased in leather.
Both call their horse friend, for without
Horse their days would be longer and harder indeed.

The Cowboy prays to God or The Lord
The Indian prays to The Creator or Great Mystery.

The Cowboy’s prayers are quietly spoken.
The Indian’s prayers are sung.

Because their words and ways are different
They cannot see their similarities in spirit.
Many bloody battles will be fought between them --
FOR WHAT?

Food, Shelter, and the Freedom to live as they choose.

My heart aches
For what to me is in plain sight.

Really, perhaps you should inform Hollywood of this and Libraries so the history books can be changed to reflect this vast understanding. Wait, retraction - you did say "understand", not agree with an equal right to be and we are not talking "government" are we?

Plus we are just talking cowboys and indians, not any other religious believes either, huh. I really must learn to not be sooooo limited.
