I'm going to Maui with an old friend in Oct & am starting to plan what to do. I know there's tons of stuff to do, but am looking for recommendations. I plan at least 1 day to scuba & my friend is a beginner. Any suggestions on a good dive?

Please say you're kidding. I was eyeball to eyeball with a shark on my 1st dive & almost died from the fright! Most experienced divers I know tell me they've never seen a shark, even after hundreds of dives. I can live with that!

i have just come back from maui i suggest you do a dive off molikini i think thats the right way to spell also the the sunrise mountain bike tour its 12000 feet up and its cold so ware warm clothes also i never seen any sharks while diving also do a surf lesson great fun and realy gets you in to the maui spirit of things hire a car and drive to hana and see natural paradises and water caves that you can swim in to and waterfalls to swim behind be very very careful on the road to hana lots of one lane briges and hairpin turns that are fatal if your eyes are not on the road also the helicopter rides are well well worth it aloha and enjoy

The road to Hana was paradise but yeah, crazy narrow roads with STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP drop offs. Go slow and pay attention. Mt Halieakala (so wrong on the spelling) was cool too - literally.

I was 6 months preggo when I went so snorkling was difficult, although I floated around with ease.

Definately take a boat out and dive or snorkel.

PACK A COOLER ON THE ROAD TO HANA!

it's a 52 mile drive that takes at least 3 hours.
and there isn't a bathroom or convenience store along the way. the first restaurant you're likely to encounter is 5 star and they charge $18 for french toast that isn't even very good! Also, leave early. You don't want to make the drive back on that road in the dark.
Waianapanapa is an incredible black sand beach that is a short hike off of the road to Hana.
Molokini is an awesome snorkeling spot...expensive and not great for first timers but I'm sure they will manage. You can sign up for a tour at any Snorkel Bob store. Big Beach is a less expensive alternative.
Lahaina has great night life.
There is a little shop called Azeka's in Kihei that serves up the best Hawaiian short ribs you will ever eat in your life. They're only open until 3 so get there early.
Don't buy chicken from the locals, it's wild chicken.
and you absolutely have to drink a lavaflow for me. deal?

Hey, thanks for all the info,dreamer. We were planning on going a different way back from Hana....so we end up circling the island. Do you know anything about that road?

a lava flow is 50/50 strawberry daiquiri and piña colada and they're basically delicious!
they don't quite taste as good at home as they do in Hawaii =)
I've never taken the other way home, I've heard the road is closed periodically though so be sure to check into it first...

I don't dive, but there are lots of great places to snorkel. You should bike down Haleakala if you like an adventurous time. You have lunch at the Protea farm which is interesting. The road to Hana is a very beautiful and fun trip,(and a must do) but be sure to take the back way around after you go up, to see the lava craters and the upcountry. Of course, the Wailea beach is fabulous too. You can take a boat over the Lanai to go jeeping into the wilderness. Maui is the most amazing place ever!!!! I love it there.
