It is more than that. They did a study. They hooked up some actors to monitor their brain patterns or something. They went with actors because they didn't tell them to look sad or happy. They told them to move facial muscles a certain way. That would ultimately lead to a smile or frown or an angry look. They discovered that the individuals brain patterns would shift to the emotion being expressed in the face, even thought the individuals were not happy, sad, or angry at the time.
So it moves beyond emotional reactions to thoughts. The emotional reactions are even triggered by changes in the facial muscles. So sometime when you are feeling sad or angry or whatever, try smiling for a while and see how long you can keep up a negative emotion while smiling. An effort to look happy even when we don't feel it won't really make us happy, but it will minimize and shorten the negativities we experience when sad or angry or whatever else. |
