Oh not to be a soldier
Who wasn't born to fight For in the heat of battle There often is much fright Thinking of the loved ones Worrying at home Will you be alright son Will you be all alone You didn't want this heartache You didn't want this pain And while you sleep In the battle zone A bomb goes off again You stumble from your barracks Alert and wide awake You're tired and cold and shivering Your body how it quakes Will you be the next one to be hit By a round of molten lead Will it be slow and painful? Or will you end up dead? This damn war, when will it end When can you at last go home Your spell of fighting over It starts anew for some You pray you are not injured Paralysed with fear You wish that you were somewhere else Anywhere but here You feel a sharp pain in your back You fall slowly to the ground The eyes start to glaze over Why can't you hear a sound You wake up in a bright room There is no sound of war No shouted orders in your ears Nothing like before As you lie there staring upwards At the bright fluorescent light You start to wonder to yourself Is it day or night Are you in heaven or in hell? There are no sounds of war A softly spoken voice you hear From beyond the distant door 'Will you keep your voices down There's a young boy dying there You feel no fear You feel no pain Your mind at once is numb Nothing is clear A silence overcomes you And then.................. |
