I love auctions, old estate auctions, antiques, etc.
I bought a box of books one time, old old old books. I came home and was flipping through them and an old post card fell out of one. The postmark was dated 1919, a Christmas postcard, addressed to RR2 (Rural Route 2...) here locally. It has the coolest old Santa smoking a pipe with a little verse on the front. I kept it and would get it out at Christmas time. One night my folks were here, Dad picked it up and looked at it and said "where did you find this??"...I told him...he laughed.... That postcard went to the house where he and his twin were born -- the year before his parents moved there! He knew both the sender and the recipient!! Small world! |

I bought a couple of milk cans at my friend's family's auction and one cream can is an antique now. I put a fountain on top of it and it sits by my front door. |

Had to find this thread and tell this story.
Just got off the phone with my Dad and he tells me the outcome ... Our County Historical Society is having a struggle financially, you know...'this generation just isn't as interested in preserving...." as "their generation...." (least that is what my Dad tells us about 10 times a month!) Anyway...a lot of people leave what is left of their estate, furnishings, etc. that their family has picked over and taken what they want to the Historical Society. Often, it's a lot of 'junk' that they end having to discard or sell since it has no relevance or link to our County and their space is limited. One lady recently left some paintings. After kinda making fun of this one painting by all, almost throwing it back in the storeroom to collect dust...Someone got curious about it since they had never heard of the artist, got on the net, started searching around...HHHMMM, contacted Sotheby's... ...and the rest of the story is that Sotheby's waived all their commissions, paid for shipping, taxes, insurance, etc. they thought it might be worth $300,000 at best. A month later it sells at a Sotheby auction for over $600,000! They even threw in the buyer's commission of $150,000 and handed that over to our Historical Society! Incredible...now why don't I have relatives who leave paintings to me??? |

I like the thrift stores myself. I especially enjoy finding a high end shirt or pair of pants for less than 5 bucks.
Best place to buy books too. |

My ex-husband passed away about 18 mos. ago, and my sons have a huge storage unit full of his things that they're trying to decide what to do with. He collected antiques, and so many other things---Longaberger baskets, snow babies, antique clocks, etc. They don't know where to begin, and I don't know what to tell them. What would you all suggest? I'm sure some of it is too valuable to sell on a rummage sale. I suppose they could call an appraiser of some kind to look at it. Any ideas? Thanks! This is right up my alley.....Tell them to get a box and sit down in front of ebay.....they might be in for awaking for what some of it is worth....I have been dealing in antiques (junk as we call it) and collectibles for 30 years....yea I started when I was 8.....and I make a nice living off ebay...I go to flea markets....junk shops....yard sales....Matter of fact a couple of weeks ago...I was in a junk shop and bought some Military Money from 1968 (31 of them) for $25.00 just sold 3 of them on ebay this past thursday for $278.00....today I spent $61 and got about $150 worth of stuff.... So don't let them get it appraised as alot of the appraisers are dealers or know dealers....tell them to do it themselfs using ebay... |

I have found a few First Edition books. One of them was worth 300 bucks so I was exceptionally amused.
I know this thread is about the " hidden treasures ", but you can find some really bizarre stuff at yard/garage sales too. The strangest thing I have ever seen at a yard sale was at one I found a couple of weeks ago. Someone was selling an old fashioned pine coffin!!! You know the ones....they are wide at the top and narrow down at the feet. I just stood there looking at it for a couple of minutes, then started laughing. I called a friend of mine about it, and she told me that I should ask them if it was used. Funny thing about it is...if I had actually had the money for it...I would have bought it. Just because. LOL |

What color of outfit does he have on...if it is not red you have a postcard worth some $$$ |
