especially when i'm troubled
i was only five when you left
so suddenly
one minute, a big kid sitting with us little ones
watching wile e. coyote fall off a cliff
cereal bowls on the floor
next to us
your smile constant
the next minute, mom and dad trying to explain
why everyone is crying
through their own choking tears
why grandpa charles is lying still
why we won't see you again
"grandpa's gone to heaven"
"god needs someone to watch cartoons with him"
"he'll miss you, too..."
i think of you often
with a twinge of regret
