they don't do that anymore, coffins go in cement valts now, but way back when it was either to prevent grave robbery, or something to do with spirits. not sure.

Having had a bro in law who was a mortician...it is because the law requires coffins to be sealed to deter grave robbing...lol...and believe it or not...to keep the dead man in his coffin during burial in case of an "accident" while interring himlaugh laugh laugh
