PHILADELPHIA - Governors from the coal fields of West Virginia to the corn fields of Iowa talked Sunday at their summer meeting about moving beyond ethanol produced just from food sources.
They sometimes have different priorities in reaching this conclusion — priorities that can be as simple as who grows corn and who feeds it to livestock. And they're also not talking about replacement so much as supplementing: using switchgrass or wood waste products, for example, along with corn. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080713/ap_on_re_us/governors_global_warming They should have been using switchback grass from the start! It has a much better ethanol production yield per ton, it's cheaper to grow, native to North America, and it's not a human food source. Ethanol is not the come-all fuel source though. It will make a temporary fix to some of our fuel needs, but it isnt a long term or green solution. It takes a lot of coal and other fossil fuels to process ethanol, and it doesn't do much to eliminate pollution. |
