Could it be possible that many of the religous scriptures were written under the influence of alchohol?
also Why do monks brew beer? Really, I would like an answer besides "God smiles upon beer," "God loves beer," etc... How about something with history, quotes, recorded information, whatever. Not something shallow or entirely theoretical. Not saying God doesn't smile upon beer. I want to know why else monks (like the ones who brew the famous Belgian Trappist beers and the others located in their Abby and Monasteries throughout Europe). |

But here's a question. Two things spring to mind. Love thine enemy Drink is thine enemy ... so should I drink all the church wine as a way of loving? |

Never tried it with Dr. Pepper.
![]() and I will drink all of the wine with you Duncan! ![]() ![]() Here is what I gather on information. Again from the internet so not sure if it is a fact, but maybe close or something to ponder on. When monks fasted they needed a source of nutrients and calories. Notice that the Trappist and Abbey ales are very heavy, full of calories, flavor. They are meal replacements for fasting monks. A secondary reason would be that water was unsafe to drink at the time, but the boiling of water to make beer sanitized the water and made it safe. They didn't know that at the time. But, once boiled, the fermentation obviously produced alcohol which preserved it. In addition, alcohol resists micro-organisms, and wouldn't make them sick like the water would. Most of Europe did this, however their resulting beers were low alcohol, perhaps 2-3% ABV, so they were consumed throughout the day and also by children. This is actually the only reason humanity survived (everywhere else had trouble with dangerous water, and every civilization has alcohol... hmmm). |

Heres another one I found
![]() ![]() Because when you spend your life celibate and in a vow of silence, you better get rewarded somehow. If I had to give up sex, and beer, I'd just waste away and die, and lose all faith in any consideration of their being a higher, all-knowing power. But at least if I lived with out sex, but was allowed beer, I could follow along thinking, maybe that big fella in the sky has a good plan after all. |
