St. Louis has many cameras at intersections. Now our neighbor is starting this highway camera. Just letting people know.
Illinois will begin using photo radar in highway work zones starting in July. Beginning in July the State of Illinois will use speed cameras in areas designated as 'Work Zones' on major highways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed. There will be a $375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense, but the SECOND offense will cost $1,000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension. Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license , which allows insurance companies to raise their rates. This represents the harshest penalty structure yet for a city or state using PHOTO enforcements. The State will begin with TWO camera vans issuing tickets in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photographs of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken. i've never gotten a speeding ticket, cause there's never reason enough to speed for me, but damn! that's a stiff ass penalty, and everybody (flow of traffic) speeds through these things a little, especially at night when there's not as much going on, if at all. are they doing it reguardless if work hours are over or not? just to make a killing? some of these things are 50 miles long, and it gets a bit much at night if you know what i mean........hi winx!

It's kind of sad to see that the government has to resort to such extremes, but I have seem way too many people driving through construction zones way over the speed limits.
It seems the cameras are the only way to get people to think about their driving instead of getting to where they are going as fast as they can, no matter who it might "impact". The cameras follow a poll done a few years ago and should not at all be surprising. The poll indicated that most Americans would give up their freedom in trade for feeling more secure.

Well, in the last 10 or so years, we have had roughly 10-12 highway workers killed my motorists in work zones,and that's just around Chicago. We have even had firefighters killed by drunks when trying to extract accident victims from cars. Do I agree with the gov't? kinda yes, kinda no. The cameras should only be active while there is work being done, IMO.

Yes, we still have to slow down, because they might be around the next curve, or at the bottom of the next hill, or if dark, they could just be there, unseen, till it's too late.

Yup they give part of the money to the company that makes the camera systems. We had them in SD but it turned out the company had jacked up the timing so people were being caught when they weren't doing anything wrong.
When that stobe light goes off and you realize its a pic of you....well it's a sick feeling. |

There's a story about a guy who got a speeding ticket with the picture that was taken at the time of the offense.
He disagreed with the whole procedure of the automated system and in protest he send a picture of the money to pay the fine He received a picture of handcuffs from the Dept. of motor vehicles. He paid the fine.

I picked up two speeding tickets, 20 years apart in the same small town. La Salle Colorado.
