I am considering Satellite Internet. I am comparing prices between Wild Blue and Hughes. I was wondering if anyone else is already using Wild Blue.

DONT DO IT. I am a tech for WB and I will tell you right now neither hughes nor WB is worth the money they ask. Save yourself alot of headachs and money and flush the idea out of your mind right now. Trust me on this. And if you do happen to go with WB then I can almost garentee I will be talkin to you when you service goes out, and trust me it will go out.

Is the satellite internet service still too young in its infancy? When I was in college at Beckfield in Florence, Kentucky when their name was still Kentucky Careers Institute we were studying T1 lines in 2000 through 2004. According to the data I was reading about Hughes Net which used to be DirectWay a part of Directtv the Directtv and Dishnet were one way communication from the satellite to the receiver. If I understand it right Wild Blue operates as a two way or transceiver. Of course, I am using Amateur Radio terms to describe this. In this rural environment or Boonies type of setting where I live the phone lines, cell phone and television reception has much to be desired. I get like one bar on my cell phone and the big antenna I got on a 40 foot pole can't get over the mountain and it is a 100 mile antenna. Dish is my best option and I am using Dishnet now. I have heard that satellite is faster anyways.

Actually hughes and WB's signals work both ways. you have to have two way comunication with the satalight or else you computer could not tell the servers what you want. Trust me satellight internet is not faster sometimes with the latency it is no better than dialup. In a few rare cases, and with the way you described your location yours might be one, it is worse than dialup becouse you can never get a signal. Please save yourself alot of headachs and money and dont get satellite internet. |

And yes satellite is fairly "new" and there are still alot of bugs to work out in the systems.

I have stayed with the phone line so far. Can't get cable at this location. Alltel land line is out because of the monopoly that Yelcot has here. It is a phone system that serves two towns and everything else is long distance. It is either Infodash or nothing because of Yelcot when it comes to land line. Thanks Rayne and Robin. Yelcot has the exclusive here. Would be interested in learning more about satellite Internet. I wonder why it is having such a hard time. Is it because of exclusivitivity?

Went down to my friendly Radio Shack dealer in Flippin, Arkansas to get a new lithium battery for my motherboard. Just before I left that town which is 6 miles from my house I inquired about to the saleslady if she knew anything about Wild Blue. She took me to a back room and on the wall I noticed a plaque about Wild Blue. Her boss said that she was just talking about me with another coworker online since I pay my AT&T phone bill there because that is where I bought the cell. She told me today was the last day of free installation for Wild Blue and just like Carlton Electronics in Yellville they said it would cost extra if they had to put a pole up for the dish. She told me it would cost 250 bucks for the gear - dish and satellite modem plus the regular monthly charge of 79 dollars. That is like over 300 bucks just to started with the free installation. She said that during rainy periods it would affect my reception. She said that they also carry Hughes Net. That answered my question of exclusiveness. Yup. It is still new atleast around here.
