THE BANDS PLAY ON
And the bands played on and on. Through decades and facades. There was glitter and gold and Grammy. There were Rhinestone Cowboys and Evil Women. There was revival, survival and Live And Let Die. There were the Animals, Beatles, Monkeys, Birds and Eagles. They were in and grooving, far out and freaked out. They were idolized, applauded and stoned. We had Moody Blues, Rockin' Blues, Rock-n-Roll Acid rock and Don’t Rock The Boat Baby. We had modernized Beethoven, Boogie Fever Shake Your Bootie and the Beat Goes On. There were flower children, love children, Hippies yuppies and groupies. There were one-night stands of setting up, tearing down, Crying out, Bands On The Run. We had Hair, a deaf, dumb and blind Pinball Wizard And Jesus Christ Superstar. We sat on the Dock of the Bay and watched up the hill For Abraham, Martin and John, In a Godda De Vida. The writers wrote songs, the musicians played them wrong And the poets cried the Tears of a Clown. It was the age of the electric guitar, the age of peace, The age of fight for rights, the Age of Aquarius. We saw War of the Worlds, Star Wars, The Year 2001, And the world stood in awe over the first man on the moon. Through it all the music played, the dreamers dreamed. The generations remained gapped, and the bands played on. The beat may change the names may be forgotten but always, The Beat Goes On. |
