You are right, that way of acting only worked in grade school, they'll have to step it up a few notchs at this point.
I still see him every once in awhile around town, he's married and has 2 kids... He told my mom he was gonna marry me when we grew up... I always remind him of that...
Aw, my 2nd grade crush was like that too...in 2nd grade we stayed outside after they called everyone in from recess hiding behind the bushes holding hands!! Except when I saw him a few weeks ago the first words out of his mouth were "OMG you are getting gray!!" 
We've been friends since before birth... and now he owns some greenhouses and is a farmer...swoon...dang. But he's a dear and very happily married to a wonderful woman with 4 beautiful children.
