In 2001 I took 41 days paid vacation after getting out of the hospital with a broken back, and bought a new motorcycle and all survival gear and took off for sturgis with freinds. From sturgis we climbed the bighorn mountains then stayed in cody. Then did yellowstone. From there I rode out to boise then up the lewis and clark trail up to mount hood to stay with an army combat freind of mine. We rode the whole area then climbed mount hood and larch mountain. Then I rode the whole west coastline top to bottom. Oregon hwy 101 and california hwy 1. 1200 miles of ocean. It was beautiful from the giant redwoods and sequoias to the wine orchards to sitting and watching giant grey whales frolicking and jumping out of the water splashing their big fantails. To stopping along the eel river north of eureka and just sitting with a fishing pole in one hand and a goldpan in the other lazily enjoying the sunshine. To driving around the bay area just for fun. Once I ran that 1200 miles I ran due north to kern canyon to ride the number 2 rated motorcycle road from west to east up into sequoia national park to stay with relatives. I spent a few days panning gold up there and made enough to pay for my 2007 motorcycle vacation. I climbed walker pass and ran across death valley and mojave desert to laughlin nevada to stay with more relatives over an exciting labor day weekend. Then it was time to go home. As I started across arizona I started seeing hundreds of hot rod cars, motorcycles, and musclecars heading east. At a gas stop I asked what was going on? They told me it was the 75th anniversary route 66 run from LA to chicago and to join them. And I did as far as I could home. I rode 7041 miles in 41 days. Took 1000 pictures. Climbed 2 mountains. Was ground zero for two big earthquakes (collapsing hole wyoming and raton new mexico). And camped out 22 out of 41 days. And spent total cost $1250 dollars. What fun.

In 2007 I got on my motorcycle with all survival gear and went to sturgis with freinds. Then I run hell canyon with a freind to her place in denver. Then I rode rocky mountain national park and peak to peak. From there I rode up mount evans to the top (see picture) putting another 14,270 feet in my pocket. Not satisfied we went down to the lake and climbed up. It snowed on the way down. From there we went down and did the royal gorge bridge. Then across colorado hwy 50 to 550 and over red mountain, molas, and coal bank and down to silverton and durango for a few days. From there I rode down to mesa verde national park to see the cliff dwellings the pueblo indians built 1600 years ago. Beautiful and spiritual and informative. From there I went to the ute mountain. There I was invited to the ute indians 2 day celebration of prayers to the mountain. Also very beautiful and spiritual. From there I ran halfway across the monave desert (small desert in colorado) and ran into a freind of mine on his bike playing hooky from work. Like cowboys outta the old west we rode across the southwest on our iron horses and packed saddlebags. We did four corners together (where colorado, utah, new mexico, and arizona meet). My freind talked me into doing monument valley national park in southern utah with all its rock formations. We rode across navajo lands and stayed with my navajo freinds. From there we split up with my freind heading home to sacramento via st george and myself doing the complete grand canyon east to west. I got detained by forest rangers and police for rock climing in kaibob national park in west grand canyon. I now know all the rules there after a heavy scolding. From grand canyon I continued west by southwest to stay with my great aunt and uncle newly retired and settled in their new home in kingman arizona. They ride motorcycles too and called all their freinds and we toured uahlipi state park in arizona. The pear cactus were in bloom and the huge elk population was a sight to behold. I stayed a few days and composed myself and refreshed and serviced my bike. From there I got up early in the morning while it was cool and rode death valley and mojave desert. By the time I reached walker pass at noon it was 141 degrees and my tires were melting. I made it to my uncles home and spent a few days drinking scotch and sightseeing in the heat. Then I rode kern canyon east to west downhill. As fast as I could. Damn was that fun. By the time I got up to visalia california harley davidson there was nothing left of my tires. But I brought new tires with me wrapped in a hundred yards of saran wrap. So we peeled those donuts and put em on. With new fresh rubber I was ready to go. And I did. I ran up and through sequoia, inyo, and yosemite national parks all in a row south to north. Then I made the 2nd biggest mistake of my life. I decided to climb tioga pass in the dark. Can you say elk and deer hunting with a motorcycle? By the time I made it to carson city I was a bit shaken and nerve rattled and physically drained. I did the carson city and reno sightseeing thing. Then it was time to go home. I partied in winnemucca nevada and went to check out the brothels because prostitution is legal and some of those whore houses are 150 years old and very nostalgic (art, artifacts, swinging saloon doors). "Mom! Dad! I went to whorehouses in nevada and made some new freinds"!!! So I run back home across the bonneville salt flats, the mountains of wyoming, boring nebraska which I ended up cutting up state highways into stinky pig poop iowa, really boring minnesota, and back home to wisconsin. I was out 39 days, exactly 7000 miles, 17 states, 12 national parks, 1000 pictures, climbed one 14,000 foot mountain and 5 11,000 foot mountains. Total cost was $5000 including resorts, tourist trap purchases, and lavish meals and gambling. Fun fun fun.

Being the economy is hurting us all, vacations will be limited. But adventure touring on a motorcycle is cheap. My biker buddies have been bugging me to map out coordinates for a ride they have wanted to go on for years. And they want me to be the ringleader. So I am mapping out these coordinates and mileage windows and weather windows to see if we can all share a motorcycle adventure together. Their plan is to do 5 days at the sturgis motorcycle rally and all its amenities. Then out and over the bighorn mountains and to cody wyoming. Then yellowstone national park including hot springs, west yellowstone, and old faithful. Then up to do montana mountains. Ride up the thunderer and red lodge and a few other locales. Then grab hwy 212 back to sturgis and stay and rest a day in the hot tub at the resort before heading all points east home. The sturgis to sturgis loop comes to around 2200 miles and would take a nice 6 days comfortably seeing all the sites. So 11 days total time including sturgis rally. So this may happen in august 2009. Get your motorcycle ready. Pack your tent, sleeping bag, tools, and an extra set of hotter sparkplugs for the mountains, saddle bags, spare parts, air mattress and pack pillow. Pack your msr cook stove, your coffee press and some of your favorite vittles. Pack that flask of your favorite whiskey and your camera and lots of film or SD cards. And don't forget to bring the most important item- toilet paper. Be self sufficient, have your own money, and have a great bike in full working order with new tires. And have an open mind and ears because I'm not wrestling a 1200 pound grizzly bear out of your tent in west yellowstone because you didn't believe us when we said a grizzly bear can smell that snickers bar in your back pocket a mile away. We take safety first very seriously and watch out for each other. We go out safely together. We come back safely together. No man or woman left behind. Fun fun fun!

Sounds like the perfect vacation. I am so tired of everyone thinking you have to go to the most expensive place in town to eat to make it sound like you have done something. I love to travel to the small remote little towns in other countries to see how people actually live their lives, not all of the tourist areas. I admit that I love Paris, but the other small towns in France are nice too.
