The question was, "who is the best" and by that I'll assume you meant pound for pound. Right now I have to go with Anderson Silva. I know that he isn't considered a favorite by everyone but I think that until someone figures out how to neutralize his kicks and his hands there will be few that want to take him on. He destroyed Rich Franklin twice and while I know Franklin isn't (nor has he ever been the best) he was the champion in that weight class for more than a while.

All of that said, I don't think BJ Penn can be overlooked and anyone who does will probably pay--but I still always wonder which BJ Penn will show up. We'll see as he continues as champion of he relaxes too much, but I would not bet against him right now.

I would say George st pierre needs a nod in this thread to....he destroyed serra......he destroyed hughes. He is the canadian version of conan the destroyer......minus the whole steriod thing

I did not forget GSP but my issue with him (as it relates to being the best in MMA right now) is that before he destroyed Serra he was destroyed by Serra. He is massively talented and when he is on his game there is no one better. It's just that he isn't always on and consistency has to be considered part of the test for "best."

I did overlook GSP, granted I still stick to it being Anderson Silva. I mean, also Michael Bisping... Bisping is great Granted I still feel Matt Hamill beat him, but from what Jeff Mullin(one of the judges) said that if the tv audience would have had the judges angle then it clearly was Michael Bisping that won...So it really depends on what weightcalss you like the best and who is having the best run.

As far as B.J. Penn goes he is so inconsistant with his weight I mean he has gone from light to welter back and forth with a stint at lightheavyweight for one fight wich he got his ass handed to him by machida(same guy that beat tito last saturday) so I just think the way he fights if he faught Joe Stevenson or Sean Shurk again at the next one he could get his ass kicked cuz he is inconsistant

I hope you guys dont think the UFC is where all the "best" fighters are at, because the only names i see here are UFC fighters.

Hey, UFC owns pride, so Fedor is considered part of that company...Hell, I will got out of that IFL fighter Ben Rothwell is one of the best heavyweights i've seen

Unfortunately yes PRIDE was bought out but my point is that the UFC barely scratches the surface of the worlds best fighters.

But, i agree is you simply read my first post the topic starter i put Dan Henderson down there also a pride fighter..... so on one hand you are right but on the other their is a reason why UFC is the most popular and the place every fighter strives to get to at one point(even if they eventually want to leave(tito)

Like him or not ( I personally don't) he did so much for the sport....Hell because of him and Chuck Lidell it is where it is...There were atletes that served as stepping stones but the publicity Chuck and Tito bring put it where it is.... I can't think of many fighters who've not been in UFC/Pride that would not go the second the contract was offered.... If for nothing else the money and the competition...Also I fight MMA and one of my MO's is to not get hit in the face, i can take it but I don't like it.... Granted unlike some people I'll never tap out due to strikes....
