Family Ties

Brothers and sisters
Siblings squabbling
Fighting and crying
Struggling to get along
When they’re born, they’re so sweet and cuddly
Walking and playing contentedly
Then comes along another baby
Vying for attention,
Hence comes sibling rivalry
At first they help, go for this and go for that
Excited to help any way they can
But as they get older
A little bolder
Learning to talk
And individualizing their character
Becoming independent
And how to get their own way
Becoming friends and foes all in the same day
What a treasure to watch them at play…

This morning as I dropped them off at school
I observed my son, Gabriel, tired and drooped
Catherine was ahead, as usual beating the group
Along the sidewalk they walked and ran
But Gabe was having a really rough time
Aaron, so sweet, so kind and good
Jumped from the van
And carried his brothers backpack to school
The relief I saw upon Gabe’s face
As his brother helped him in this race
Brought a contented sigh, one I’ll never forget…

Although they have problems
And squabble each day
I realize the love and compassion
Each has for the other
I feel overwhelming pride
And this act of kindness may seem such a small thing
But, overall, it brings tears of joy,
‘cause as a MOM, I’ve taught them a few things...

Through the fighting, spankings, and scoldongs
Each night as they say their prayers
I listen as they say goodnight
And see the hugs go all around
I hear their thanks, and know the angels must sing
‘Cause this love they have
I’d never trade for anything…

From the outside looking in
Others may see rivalry and blame
They may only see the negative things
But, if you stick around, and just wait and observe
You’ll see exactly what I mean:

A big brother taking up for you in a fight
A sister helping out, getting it right
Working together to set the table for dinner
Running a bath, or getting a towel
Cleaning up spills, wiping up the milk
Throwing the football around in the yard
Playing together as a last resort
Keeping an eye out for strangers
Giving advice on the dangers
Teaching each other how to ride a bike
Bandaging up the others scrapped knees
Giving piggy back rides and laughing with glee
Telling jokes and eating jelly beans
Wrestling in the living room, and breaking things
Saying SHHHH, I won't tell, I won't say a thing
Helping with homework, learning to read
Reciting the A, B, C’s…

None of this is an easy task,
But…
It’s family
It’s love
And the ties that last…

Michael, yes it can, and does! Thank you...

Denise, I can't imagine my kids growing up and actually moving out of
the house. With each birthday we celebrate, I mourn and rejoice at the
same time...I want to keep them innocent and at home as long as
possible, yet take pride in their independance and lessons of growing
up...I tell them all the time that I am gonna put a brick on their heads
to keep them from growing, and take away their birthdays...LOL! We laugh
about that all the time!...I'm glad this brought back wonderful memories
for you...

Venurose, Thank you as well...and the blessings go on and on...

Flowers, peace and love to you all...
