No that is what people theorize because the Mayan Calendar ends on December 21, 2012. There is no definate proof that the Mayan's "predicted" anything about this date. The end will come, most theorize that in the year 2012 most countries will be so overwhelmed with natural crisis (oil reserves, weather anomalies) that they will effectively go broke thus ending their economy and throwing the country into anarchy. Realistically speaking the world isn't going to end by some asteroid falling from space, it is going to end because Human's will end it. That being said, I don't believe in God so I don't believe there will be anyone "saved".
