If you have more than one computer, buy a flashdrive that allows you to install applications on it. From the other computer, install SpyBot, CCleaner and AVG or Avast anti-virus. Try running them on the non-working computer. I have seen viruses that do exactly what you are describing.

did just that, downloaded avg onto flash drive - installed onto computer - ran comp check - nothing found not even tracking cookies, no viruses nothing?

One of my computers worked fine on Monday, dont know what happened, if anyone installed anything onto it, but now the desktop is changed, I cannot change the default page of IE. I cannot change the toolbar to show the menu bar nor can I search. Everytime I open IE it acts as though I just downloaded it, asking me to set preferences, but they are not changeable. Went as far as to go to msconfig and see what else was running with the normal programs cannot find anything new. went to add/delete programs nothing new added. what can it be? IE doesnt let me download anything, no java, no avg, no firefox, absolutely nothing. help...

You're probably gonna have to re-format your hard drive, as there's something seriously amiss here. Hope you've got your programs backed up.

had no choice but to reformat it; and reinstall all those progms - but I set an admin level on it so no one can download w/o my ok devil

Agggh!
Just got in --- long hrs-----
Reformatted!? We weren't yet out of possibilities . . .
Safe Mode, Selective Startup, remove IE (that's where the primary issue was I think?), and on, and on . . .
C'est La Vie, were you able to retrieve your data at least?

-Power cycle your 'Net modem so that it receives a new IP addr from the provider . . .
-Image the newly formatted drive -as soon as you get everything installed- with http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm. Save the image and the app to cd as insurance. . .
Hopefully that will go a long way toward avoiding the nightmare you just went through, or at least provide a faster recovery!
