Death by the hands of man, instituted as a legal authority by governing bodies....
This is a tuff one. As a christian and firm believer in God it goes against everything I believe...yet as a human I am torn by my own thoughts, How can we not punish society for there actions...ie killing, molesting and raping...especially to children. How can we stand by and let someone get away with this? Or do we let God take care of it in his own time... I know I would probably fail as a christrian, if it were my family that had suffered such acts of brutality. I dont know there is an answer, more of individual opinions and beliefs. I can not judge you for wanting to put someone to death...Nor should I judge you for not wanting it. I have been involved with prison ministry, does it help...I just dont know. |

The actual idea of "state sanctioned killing" is a bit misleading.
There's a lot one has to do to get sentenced to death. Federal death penalty statues are actually higher than many states. Currently there's 36 states with the death penalty. To be put to death for a crime was quite common, but now it's getting to be less so. Most of Europe, for example, has abolished the death penalty. Canada and most of South America, as well. Much of Asia and Africa retain it. South Africa, though, does not. If you want to argue AGAINST capital punishment in your paper. First, start by using the space bar, it's your friend. Embrace it. Next, find a moral ground to speak from in regards to the death penalty. Don't claim being Catholic if you aren't. The most common arguments against it: Putting the wrong man(or woman) to death, and killing someone for doing the exact same thing they did (an eye for an eye). There are those who are opposed to abortion, but for the death penalty. Seems a contradiction at first. They will tell you that with abortion, the child is innocent. With the death penalty, the person is guilty. Those are a few (brief) points. Whatever you do, don't BS your way through 3 pages.... (= |

What is the nature of death etc. Does the state have the right to determine when some of the citizens should or should not die?
I'm going to bring Social Contract theory into this. Government gets it's power from a social contract (like the constitution) created by people, willing to give up certain natural rights in exchange for benefits. Take natural man for example, he has the ability to kill, rape, steal, or attack anyone he deems fit to. However, in order to gain benefits that help him to better survive, he and his neighbor make an agreement to defend eachother, as long as they don't attack eachother etc. If they violate the contract, there will be consequences. So because government gains it's power from the laws that were set forth by the representatives of the people, I would say that the government has the power to enforce a law that has been made and is approved by the people. When someone violates a law such as "Don't murder" the repercussions that are outlined in the contract will tell how to deal with violators. In that sense, government has the right to kill someone when there are laws in place that allow them to do so. Because the laws are made and given power by the people who are subject to them. |
