Topic: I Need Advice.........Big Time!!! | |
---|---|
Ok, here's the deal.....my stepfather has been sexually harrassing me since February, and last week tried to talk me into having my mother committed in the psychiatric at the local hospital up there (I'm in SC they're in NC).......After finally telling my father (who I live with) about it, we agreed that my Momma needs to know...............so here's my dilemma.......
How exactly do I tell her this?????? She was in love with this man, but he won't have anything to do with her anymore and she's tired of it.....I know she's going to be really upset about it and I hope she doesn't snap...(she's bipolar).... Any Suggestions??? |

The number one thing to remember about all of this is your own safety and the safety of your mother. You most definitely need to tell her and in my opinion just because shes bipolar doesnt mean she needs to be institutionalized (at least not indefinitely). It sounds to me like your stepfather is trying to get her out of the way so that he can be alone with you. You and your mother need to talk about everything thats happened and find a safe course of action...i would suggest getting away from him and helping your mother to find a way to get a therapist and start on some medications if she hasnt already. Im a councelor for a local center for low income family mental therapy if you need to talk or need any assistance send me a message and we can talk more privately.

The truth hurts, but it also sets you (and everyone else) free.
It always has been the best policy, especially on something like this. |

Your mother can't come to any sort of informed conclusion until she knows the facts. Don't sugar-coat it, and don't embellish -- just let her know the real story. Make sure she understands that that you did not encourage or misinterpret his behavior in any way -- typically, when confronted, a man in that situation will either say he was joking around, or the girl started it -- and that you just want it to stop, period. It's going to be difficult, but if she knows you're there for her, you can both get through this.

Since you have spoken with your Dad, perhaps you and he can talk to your mother together.

There is no good way to say something like this. Get her to sit down, sit beside her or below her level (subconciously she will realize you're not being agressive that way), look her dead in the eyes, hold her hands and then tell her, everything.
Be as blunt as a sledgehammer too, include some detail, but do not go overboard, this will reinforce to her that you are being truthful. Believe me, she isn't going to want to hear this, but in a day or two, she'll be glad you told her. Some people would equate it to pulling a bandaid, get it over quick. But I say it's like pulling a tooth. It takes time, medication doesn't really help with pain, but in a couple of days, the pain subsides and you find the problem less difficult to deal with. Now as far as your mom needing psychiatric help, probably not necessary, but I can not be sure not having met her. She probably just needs general support from her family, apparently her husband hasn't been any support for a while. I didn't look at your profile, probably should have, but if you are young enough, and your step-dad's been doing this long enough, you might want to tell the police as well. Attempted indescent liberties with a minor is never okay. |
