Topic: why? | |
---|---|
why is that some (again read some not all) just like to take one sentence or phrase from a whole (post or book) and take the whole message out of context?
This is a general question, and it applies to everybody christians, nonchristians, etc. |

Yes but it is only one sentence. And it is always taken out of context of the whole Bible. You can't just throw up one J 3:16 and ignore the stonings and the dead first born. It is a Big Bible with a lot of info there. How can you not want to put up everything? |

Everyone brings their own point of view to the subject and interprets it according to said point of view. They then look for examples in the book to prove them right. It's called human nature.

Sad thing is, People generally use those one liners because they're ignorant to the rest of the word. I tend to think of different passages and stuff when I'm in a conversation - stuff that relates to what we're talking about..But I don't think I take it out of context. I think you might be generalizing a bit. :\

This is a general question, and it applies to everybody christians, nonchristians, etc. I will tell you why. One complete sentence should be a complete statement and should technically stand on its own. When I evaluate information, books, essays etc. I want to evaluate the entire body of information. But then I break it down into chapters, paragraphs, and complete sentences ~~ then at the very last, words. If there is some word I don't understand, I look it up in the Webster dictionary. Sometimes I read a statement over several times. If it is not written well, it could be difficult to understand. But I do expect the author to make complete statements (sentences) that stand on their own. If a sentence is not true on its own, it is suspect. I don't like to assume anything. JB P.S. You did not mention the Bible, so I am assuming you mean any post or any book. |

Now ur dissertation has lots of truth. However, I meant those people who use one sentence and take it out of context just to fulfill an agenda. |

Sometimes it’s nice to address specific points of people’s posts for the sake of brevity. I'm always curious why other people will quote an entire lengthy post only to address one sentence within it. Why not just quote that single thought?
I’m certainly not going to quote a full page of insults directed at me just to address a single point a poster might have made. Some people just like to run at the mouth with personal insults and innuendos. I can’t see quoting all that nonsense unless I intend on addressing it directly. I have no problem with people quoting snippets of my posts that they would like to respond to. However, if they do it to purposefully just to twist the meaning of my words or make like I was saying something I didn’t say then I’d would have a problem with that. It just isn’t always necessary to quote an entire post if you’re only going to address a specific thought within it. Especially if you see the other poster misunderstood you early on. Why not just quote the sentence that reveals that they misunderstood you, and show them that anything beyond that point is meaningless because they are starting with a misunderstood premise. |

Yes that is a good point Abra. I don't see a need to show the entire post if you are responding to one or two lines.
And if the sentence's are complete statements in themselves, as they should be, that should not be a problem. I am sure there are complete sentences that taken out of context don't make sense or can be misinterpreted and in that case one should quote surrounding paragraph and name the source for further investigation. Also there are parables and ambiguous statements that are not clear and can be misinterpreted out of context. JB |
