I'm celebrating Cinco De Mayo
early by having spaghetti w/meat sauce and shiraz! Ok, it's Italian, not Mexican but it is ethnic. Maybe tommorrow I'll get a taco or a burrito. |

Yesterday at the Cinco de Mayo celebration, I had a huge burrito and elote. Yum. Elote is corn-on-the-cob with mayo smeared onto it, then rolled in parmeson (sp?) cheese, then sprinkled with chili powder. Delicious.

I'm Mexican and it's funny, I have never celebrate cinco de mayo before, untill I get here. This is my question what do you think, why american people have adopted this celebration? Because when there is no inner culture in a population. this population adopts anything that comes at hand. |

I thought it was the Hispanics that were celebrating the Cinco de Mayo. When I go to Cinco de Mayo in my city, whites are a minority there. |

I have no problems with Mexicans. Unless they are coming to America illegally. But I don't discriminate. I have a problem with anyone not going through legal channels to live and work in the USA.
I don't celebrate the holiday because it's not mine.I would probably be having a beer anyway. 20 years ago no Americans cared because the marketing gurus had not hit the gold mine yet. I still don't care. |

If this holiday is not yours, does that mean that you have never celebrated St. Pat's Day, a German Straussenfest, a Greek festival or an Italian festival? |

I have celebrated St. Patrick's Day but then again my family is of Irish decent. They immigrated here 4 generations ago and did so through Ellis Island legally. I don't fly an Irish flag on that day. The flag in front of my place is the American flag because I am an American. Not an Irish-American or any other hyphenated label.
I don't mind Americans celebrating non American holidays. I'm not crazy about seeing folks who shouldn't even be here celebrating their country's independence or any other holiday for their "home country". If they want to celebrate their country's heritage without assimilating into ours legally I'd rather have them do that at home in their "home country". Diversity is cool when it's legal. I don't go into the city and celebrate Puerto Rican day either. When I see flags hanging out of windows in highly populated urban areas I just prefer them to be American. This is America right? |

Yes, diversity is cool when it's legal. But..we were talking about a festival and you brought up illegal aliens. Ya know? I've never heard of Puerto Rican day. We don't have that. I make a point of taking my child to these different festivals so that they may learn about other nationalities and don't grow up to prejudiced. American flags in urban areas - St. Louis has an Italian area. It's known for it's many restaurants, Catholic schools, and some baseball players. It's been here for at least 60 years. They fly Italian flags. We have no problem with that. It lets us know we are there. They also have American flags. |

I do know.
Illegal immigration is a huge issue right now. I'm sorry if I let it sneak into a thread about Americans celebrating a Mexican holiday while the overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants in the US are from Mexico. The Mexican government encourages it for crying out loud. I have no problem with folks of Italian origin flying Italian flags but even you said they also fly the American flag. Not so for some other nationalities within our country. |

Is this day over yet? I'm tired about hearing it on the radio with the DJs saying "HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO! TIME TO DRINK!!"
Didn't we do that a few weeks ago for St. Patrick's day? I guess German Beer fest is coming up, but at least theres more to do than just drink....theres crazy Germans =D |
