Talking about if they are legal, they can buy their own: You know that in St. Louis, the firefighters put smoke detectors in houses that have low-income, elderly and/or disabled persons living in them. They don't want anybody to die in a fire on their watch. People don't choose to be low-income, elderly or disabled. Most of them have worked and paid taxes. You could someday become low-income or disabled. It only takes an instant for something to happen to change one's life. I am sad for you that you think that "people are content to stay in their rut of a life" when they are low-income, elderly or disabled. |

Rob there is nothing wrong with that, who said they were illegally here? Doesn't mean all of them keep it up. Some traditions die hard and they want to speak their home language. And there is nothing wrong with that either. You are the one who brought up "keeping with the language". You can't even do that yourself. If that's a personal attack, my sincerest apologies. Good night, I'm done. I've said what I needed to say. |

Good night, I'm done. I've said what I needed to say. These are your opinions, and you are welcome to them. You seem to have understood everything I have said with no problem, so I think I can communicate with my fellow citizens with realtive ease. You should check the spelling, and structure of your own posts, you are not innocent of mistakes yourself. I do not worry too much about structure, and spelling on this, or any other forum. But if you just wish to resort to insulting me to make yourself feel better, by all means do so |

And there is nothing wrong with that either. I didn't know that you were prejudiced. I thought that you only disliked having illegals here. I did not mean to insult you. I was calling it as I see it. Saying that a race needs to go back to their country if they can't keep the language up is prejudiced IMO. I have Hispanic friends that own a restaurant. They struggle with their English. They have taken English classes. I have helped them too. It is harder for the adults to learn than the children. The main customers of their restaurant are Hispanic. They are around Spainish speaking people all day. Their English is getting worse now. Should they go back to Mexico because of that. NO. I have a friend from Vietnam. She sometimes has trouble with her English. She is married to a Dr. and is a biologist. Should she go back home. NO. I understand them having problems remembering English when they are awakened from sleep. ![]() I don't think that the illegals should be here either. Do you know that they have made smoke detectors with the parent's voices telling their children to get up - there is a fire? They found out that chldren sleep through the beeps and wake up easier when they hear their parent's voices. |

I take the bus to work. Years ago there were several Chinese people who took the bus with me. All very polite humble people. EXCEPT they would start talking in their native language deliberately so no one could understand what they were talking about. One day I got soooo mad I said out loud for the entire bus passengers to hear "Excuse me, but this is the United State and we speak English." Dead silence. But, let me tell you. The one woman who did this quite frequently, well the Park 'n Ride where we park our cars and catch the bus to downtown PGH. would get very crowded at times, yet I was always there to direct her into getting into a spot and avoid smashing into another car. She was always late and in a hurry. I always got out of line and went and helped her. No one else would. Eventually she apologized to me for deliberately speaking her native language to her friends so no one would know what was being said. ![]() End of my story. Lindyy ![]() |

But to talk so blatantly loud THAT is total disrespect. ![]() Lindyy |

The school I go to gives English as a second language, financed by the State with tax-payers money.
When the last immigration bill was before congress it would have required the illegals to learn English to have any chance of becoming a citizen. The response was massive and immediate. They had so many illegals signing up for the English classes the school was forced to hire extra teachers. (Only 1 in 17 are legal here) Anyway, after hiring the extra teachers and forking out the tax dollars to pay for it, congress voted down the bill. Poof, no more participation, no interest in learning English at all, and the ones who were enrolled already, disappeared, dropped out. The tax-payers were out the money, and the school was forced to lay-off all the teachers they had just hired. The illegals have no interest at all in learning English unless it is required of them. Even when the classes are free!! |

Sorry, I see things differently than you do, but I will not apologize anymore for feeling that way Rob, we will always bump heads on this issue. Neither of us is going to change. You don't need to apologize for your feelings. I was just showing some other views and hoped you could see them. Let's just agree to disagree, okay? I do hope things work out for you the way you want them to as you grow older. I have had some of those instant life changers take me by surprise. All the planning in the world can't change those. |
