Ya know with the price of just about everything going up and our wonderful govmnt. sending our those tax rebate checks. For single person as myself......how far do they really think $600.00 is going to go.....or $1200.00 or $300.00 for someone who made less then three thousand last year.

Oh I am not complaining that my rebate will be here soon...but I don't plan on spending it unless it's absolutly necessary and for me just the necessities of life (gas, food, meds. etc) are necessary.....so I see that lasting maybe 2 months.
How do you think I feel.... I've been on workman's comp for 4 and a half years!!! I don't get a rebate cause they don't take taxes out of my check!! I've had 2 back surgeries and the nerves in my legs are messed up!! I don't get a raise....I stay the same.....try and live what I live on and get by.....  But, I'm making due.......I have to budget and take care of myself.....I work it and make it happen..... happy As long as I stay happy and get out once in a while......I'm okay

I spent 70 bucks at wal-mart the other day, hardly got anything to show for it. Especially when you buy fresh fruits and veggies, it gets expensive. I got some stuff to make soup, salads, sandwhiches, and fruits, and few other basics like soap and shampoo.

I planted tomatoes and bell peppers, plan to grow more produce. They are killing us with these prices, but nobody in Washington seems to care. We are headed for a recession and fast. I make three times the minimum wage. I don't see how people making minimum wage can survive, people are stripping copper out from under peoples houses, Robbery is up 19% in Georgia from this same time last year. But not to worry folks, all is well in the middle east.
I wish I could plant more stuff. I don't have any room for a veggie gardenfrown I got a couple of tomato plants and that's it. But once the farmers markets open up it will help, I hopeohwell

We can't totally, but a home garden & buying what you can locally is a good start. As soon as I can get some land, I will have chickens & rabbits.

I hear ya fly....and I feel the pinch like everybody. I live on what I call a poverty stricken paycheck. Just a hair above min. wage. Been this way for a few years now. I feel for ya with the back surgeries and all too (had one of them myself 10 years ago) and have perm. nerve damage in the right leg...but like you said...you make it work, you have to otherwise you'll drive yourself crazy.

The use of corn in ethanol is pushing food prices up also. Ethanol is a great idea, but we could make it from other vegetation.

There's a plant being built in PA to make it from garbage. I'd like to see more of that.

I can't have much of a garden here on this rented lot, but I do grow tomatos & peppers in 5 gallon buckets & some leaf lettuce in trays. This year I am going to look for bargains at the famers market to freeze, can & dry. I got a dehydrater at a yard sale for 2 bucks.
I have a bread machine & buy bulk flours & yeast at a local Amish store.

Re gas prices - here in Ohio we pay an additional .49 per gallon just in taxes. Congress would like you to believe the oil companies are only at fault (although also part of the problem), they do their best to hide the taxes we pay. So, mad about the whole issue, I did a little math:

Do you realize that after payroll tax, state and local tax, sales tax, property tax, etc., your "true" net pay is less than 50% of your gross? Pathetic!

Take a look at your utility bills, there are more hidden taxes there.

Ive been reading alot about sustainable food......growing food and buying local food from local farmers which is great because not only will you be helping your own economy but healthier.

Unfortunately you may not get all that you are used to, because of importation from other countries....ohwell
