I bought this old chest from a thrift store (Picture is up), and I want to restore it. I thought about sanding it down painting the red a dark chocolate brown, re-paint the black, black. And refinish the natural wood part. Polish up the brass and get a piece of glass for the top (to turn it into a coffee table). Think that would look OK?

I like the RED!

It is a nice red, but WAY to scratched and messed up.

Make sure its not worth that much before you screw with the original finish. You could actually De-value the piece

Have you considered an antique finish? Most stores sell an additive for your paint colors to give it an antique look. Easy, and very cool!

If it's an antique at all, ask a professional as refinishing/painting could decrease its value.

It looks like it could be pretty old and maybe worth something I would have someone check it out before you painted it |

Use it to bury your ex-husband at sea. Can I get an amen from the congregation?? |

I just got two old ones from a garage sale friend bought them for me and I plan on doing the same thing but........ first I'm going to call and antique dealer and take one for them to look at for if you do any cleaning to them the value goes way down. Have it checked out if it is not worth any value or more then you paid for them then go for it for they will make great coffee tables or end tables

Oh man! I wanna find a chest like that! That is cool looking. The only chest I have is an ice chest with a broken latch! If its in nice shape, clean it up and use it like it is.

Ahh...sand it up, and use Penetrol! Would look great! Mix it down with 25% turpentine, will penetrate pretty well, look good, and if you mess it up, just wipe with more Penetrol, it heals itself.
Nice find! |

amonia bath and VERY light sand where and only if needed, perhaps some cherry red (cabernet#457 stain) then varnish...
